This is one of the most carved literati themes in Chinese decorative arts. The Seven Sages were 3rd-century scholars, poets and musicians who withdrew from a corrupt Wei-dynasty court to drink, debate, and play music together in a bamboo grove — a deliberate rejection of official life in favour of naturalness, wit, and nonconformity. The composition here — robed figures seated around what looks like a table or wine vessel, dense bamboo stalks framing the scene, the zigzag "grass hut" or cloud-band border at the rim — matches the standard visual grammar for this subject on brush pots from the Qing period onward.
